‘Is faith in public life good for Britain?’

  • On September 11th 2001 two hijacked planes flew directly into the twin towers of the World Trade Centre in New York. The culprits were Muslim men, who believed passionately that they were doing the will of Allah, and would be rewarded in the afterlife for their deeds. 3,000 people died.
  • More than £50 million pounds was given to Tearfund, a Christian relief organisation, to help those in dire need - such as those affected by the 2004 tsunami. Those who gave did so because of their Christian faith, which leads them to share what they have to help others. We don’t know how many hundreds of thousands of people have benefited.

Climate Change and the Environment have become popular issues in the church. They can easily get merged with other good causes like fair-trade and debt-reduction. It is lack of clarity, rather than error that leads to this.

Co-belligerency: Limits, Opportunities and Dangers

To some it seems obvious that Christians want to serve God in the world - to love God and neighbour - and to warn about the dangers of getting too close sounds miserly and mean-spirited. But Christ speaks of the field of wheat containing weeds planted by the enemy.[1] He speaks of a world where spiritual warfare is visible and constant. Modern Western Christianity has lost much of this awareness and does not see the Christian life as a dangerous one. But a theologically mature attitude to co-belligerence may provide a richer framework on which to base public involvement and may enable Christians to participate more fully in society.
