‘God is love’ claims John in his first epistle, and yet in the world that God has made his creatures suffer. How can this be? How can a God who has love as His very being create a world with pain, hurt and death. How can one explain the presence of suffering in the world that God has made?

The Sovereign and Responsive God

It is important not to simply accept classic definitions of God, but to accept God’s self-revelation in relation to his creation as narrated and explained in the canonical scripture. There are a number of elements of His character as revealed in the Bible which are important to emphasise.

A Sovereign God of Love

1 John 4

7 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. 8Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. 10In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 11Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us. 13By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. (1 John 4)
